House Sitting Horror Stories:

How do you avoid terrible sits?

In a recent post shared within our Facebook Group for digital nomads and house sitters, one member highlighted the unexpected challenges of house & pet-sitting. While the allure of house sitting often paints a picture of an idyllic and cost-effective adventure, it’s crucial to remember that not all experiences guarantee a serene getaway.

The sitter encountered several issues from the outset, including an unwelcoming host, unsanitary living conditions, and excessive surveillance! They were unexpectedly burdened with additional expenses, such as vehicle rental not reimbursed by the host, and faced strict, unreasonable house rules in challenging conditions. Despite the hardships, the sitter felt compelled to stay, prioritising the welfare of the pets over their own comfort.

This account serves as a poignant reminder that the house sitting industry, despite its appeal, requires careful consideration and discernment. Both sitters and homeowners must communicate clearly and set realistic expectations to avoid such negative experiences. It's vital to verify details, discuss mutual expectations thoroughly, and possibly seek reviews or references before committing.

For more tips on navigating the complexities of house and pet sitting, and to connect with experienced sitters who can share their advice, consider joining our Facebook Group.

We recently published guidance for house sitters specifically in the UK about overcoming challenges. Much of the advice applies world-wide though. Read more here πŸ‘ˆπŸΌ

πŸ“WHERE IN THE WORLD IS ATHENS, GREECE?

β€œAncient history meets modern remote work…”

We were recently in Athens and reminded that it is so much more than just a gateway to the Greek islandsβ€”it’s an up-and-coming digital nomad hotspot blending rich history, vibrant culture, and an affordable Mediterranean lifestyle. With its year-round sunshine, thriving cafe scene, and growing co-working options, it’s a fantastic place to work remotely while soaking up the city’s energy.

When you’re off the clock, explore the ancient Acropolis, take a sunset stroll along the Athenian Riviera, or hop on a ferry to a nearby island for a weekend escape. With a warm community, delicious food, and a lower cost of living than other European capitals, Athens is an ideal base for digital nomads looking to mix work with adventure.
