I’m a content nerd of old, and it’s because of this that I frequently end up in geeky conversations about working online. In fact, I landed in a thought-provoking brainstorm about copywriting and remote work recently with some of our community members. Our conversation's take-aways felt pertinent to share – I think they could be useful for you too 😄
If I’ve learnt anything in my decade as a Communications & Marketing Manager, it’s that copywriting skills can be helpful in ALL aspects of life, not just in a corporate newsroom. Whether you're applying for remote roles, reaching out to new clients, managing your house-sitting profiles, or running your own freelance business, the effectiveness of your copy can dramatically influence success.
So, today I'm excited to share with you a straightforward 7-step guide to creating copy that not only captures attention but converts your audience into action-takers.
1) Check your work
Before anything else, do your utmost to ensure your copy is free from errors. A simple typo can detract from your professionalism. Check meticulously for:
- Grammar mistakes
- Spelling errors
- Poor sentence structure
Remember, flawless copy reflects your attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Rarely do we get it right independently, so try asking a friend to proofread your copy. Or, run your work through ChatGPT to help you if you’re on your own.
2) Ensure smooth reading
Your copy should guide the reader effortlessly from beginning to end. Remove any elements that might interrupt the flow:
- Eliminate sudden or rough transitions
- Rewrite confusing statements
- Connect disjointed sections
Creating a smooth narrative will keep your audience engaged and eager to read on. Again, great to seek a second set of eyes for this, or check with ChatGPT.
3) Clarify your message
Complexity can be a barrier to understanding. Simplify your copy by:
- Shortening long words and sentences
- Breaking up lengthy paragraphs
The goal is to make your message accessible and straightforward, enhancing its potential to stand out.
4) Craft a captivating headline
Your headline is the gateway to your content. Make it compelling enough to:
- Grab attention instantly
- Spark interest
- Encourage further reading
Refine your headline until it accomplishes these objectives, as it sets the stage for the effectiveness of your entire piece.
Tip: if you’re not great with headlines (like me!), check your inbox for subject lines or titles that entice you to click. Model your own work on these examples.
5) Concentrate your focus
Streamline your copy to concentrate on a single core message. This includes:
- One key idea
- One promise to fulfil
- One specific call to action (CTA)
A focussed approach ensures that your message is not diluted and resonates more powerfully with your audience.
6) Address potential objections
Anticipate and counter any reservations your audience might have by:
- Listing possible objections or questions
- Directly addressing these within your copy
Turning potential negatives into positives not only clears the path for your intended recipient(s) to act, but also boosts the persuasive power of your copy.
7) Design dynamic CTAs
Your call to action is crucial.
Make sure each CTA is clear and compelling by telling your audience:
- What they will gain
- What they should do next
- Why quick action is beneficial
A strong CTA converts interest into action, sealing the deal on your communication efforts.
By following these seven steps, you'll be well on your way to creating copy that not only resonates but also results in a higher response or action rate as required by you. Apply these principles across all your writing tasks, from job applications to client emails, and watch as your responses improve.
Tip of the Week💡
Cool New Google 👀
Have you seen the news from Google? The company has revealed exciting cutting-edge AI functionalities at its Google I/O conference, featuring Gemini Nano, an on-device AI for Pixel phones, capable of sophisticated interactions like real-time scam call detection. They highlighted its ability to seamlessly integrate and analyse data across multiple modes – images, sounds, and video.
Notably, the AI demonstrated a remarkable feature where it could locate items, like spectacles, by viewing them through the phone's camera. Additionally, Google introduced AI-driven enhancements for Search and Photos and previewed new content creation tools for artists, offering transformative potential in creative industries by generating music, images, and videos.
We especially like the implications for creating digital content, although we have both been known to lose our glasses too...
Anyway, check it out:
Have a great week :)
